Antonio Maria Valsalva and the origins of experimental medicine in Bologna

From Dec. 14 to Feb. 11, the Palazzo Poggi museum will host an exhibition honoring Antonio Maria Valsalva, a great exponent of the golden age of Bolognese medicine. The goal of Valsalva, a pupil of Marcello Malpighi and master of Giovanni Battista Morgagni, was to observe reality in its smallest details so as to identify the truth.

The exhibition, presented by the University Museum System, the University Library of Bologna and the Accadenia of Sciences Institute of Bologna, was organized to celebrate the third centenary of Antonio Maria Valsalva's death. Following his death, his student Giovanni Battista collected a range of materials including pathology cards, letters from patients and colleagues, and volumes from the master's library that are now part of the exhibit.
