Opera by Carl Orff staged at the Comunale Nouveau on 31 October, 2 and 3 November 2024.
When the Middle Ages are in fashion, the Middle Ages are invented. It happens in Romanticism; it happens in neo-Gothic architecture that fills cities (including Bologna) with merlons and triple lancet windows; it happens in music, when ancient, or antiquated, modes and styles are dusted off. Carl Orff invented it, without philological pretensions, when, between 1934 and 1936, he composed a cantata on verses by clerici vagantes, itinerant students, from the 11th and 12th centuries collected in the Codex Buranus. He makes the profane hymn to Fortuna the Empress of the World the setting for five goliardic, satirical and erotic sequences in Latin, Old French and Middle High German. Thus, despite the nationalist flavour of the literary reference to the origins, the regime critics did not welcome the exuberance of the themes and musical elaboration. Elements that, on the other hand, would guarantee the fame of Orff's work, inspired by the pungent spirit of the first European academics and by now an integral part of the common imagination, from cinema to pop.
