One day in Bologna with your children

Updated on 05 March 2020 From Bologna Welcome

Bologna is perfect for families stroll under arcades, climb towers and relax in parks, explore fun exhibitions and museums, or enjoy books and learning in kid-friendly libraries.

Hunting for details among porticoes and towers

Start your child-friendly itinerary in Strada Maggiore, in front of Corte Isolani: challenge the little ones to find the ancient arrow hidden under the portico! A few steps away, in Piazza Santo Stefano, children can explore the magical complex of the “Seven Churches”, where every corner looks like a small labyrinth. Continue to Piazza della Mercanzia and admire the iconic Two Towers, whose area is closed to the public for extraordinary maintenance. Those who feel up to it can climb the Clock Tower in Piazza Maggiore for a 365° view of the city. Nearby, the Jewish Ghetto offers hidden glimpses and mysterious towers, perfect for a little urban adventure.

Child-friendly culture and curiosities

Next head to Piazza del Nettuno, where the austere Palazzo Re Enzo and the famous statue of Neptune towering above the fountain of the same name stand. Enter the Salaborsa: children will be enchanted by the transparent floor that reveals the archaeological excavations underneath, and in the children's library on the first floor they will find readings, games and activities designed for them.

Finally, on the top floor, an interesting activity for children but also for their adult companions: listening to vinyls from the Santonastaso family's private collection donated to the Municipality of Bologna for free and public enjoyment.

➝The music will bring everyone together! Remember to book your free listening room time on the official website.

Cross the Voltone del Podestà for an amusing acoustic experiment: stand at opposite corners of the arches and speak in a low voice...“wireless telephone” effect assured! In Piazza Maggiore, visit the Basilica of San Petronio, symbol of the city, where the sundial leaves everyone speechless. Not far away, the Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio, seat of the first university in the western world, fascinates adults and children alike with its historical library and Anatomical Theatre. The cultural tour ends at the Archeological Civic Museum, where the Egyptian collection captures the attention of children.

Playgrounds and green spaces for an outdoor break

When it is time for a break between visits, Bologna offers several green spaces ideal for families. The Giardini Margherita is the city's most popular park: large lawns, a small lake, and play areas make it perfect for a fun and relaxing break.

In the Saragozza district, the Villa Spada Park offers panoramic views and a garden to explore. And for those looking for an even more dynamic experience, the Cavaioni Adventure Park in the Bologna hills, just a few minutes' drive from the centre, offers suspended trails that are also suitable for children. Finally, for a plunge into fun, the Luna Farm theme park offers rides, games and mascots in a setting inspired by the Emilian countryside. Nearby is Grand Tour Italia, which will surprise you with the extent and richness of its Italian gastronomic offerings; here a lunch break is a must!
