In the shade of the porticoes - 3rd section: Galliera
Updated on 16 January 2025 From Bologna Welcome
The porticoes of Via Galliera represent one
of the oldest and most important streets in Bologna, where the ancient columns
and the elegant façades of the buildings intertwine the Middle Ages with modern
life.
Originally considered the most noble street
in Bologna, Via Galliera was the itinerary taken by those who
approached the city from the north. Its porticoes provided shelter to the
numerous merchants and travellers who chose this route.
These are porticoes of great architectural elegance, characterised by magnificent senatorial palaces, such as Palazzo Aldrovandi, Felicini and Dal Monte: buildings that bear witness to the power and wealth of the ancient Bolognese families who asserted their status here through art and architecture.
The Porticoes of Via Galliera are a
combination of architectural styles that reflect the evolution of the city. A
succession of brick and travertine columns accompany the passer-by along a
route of continuity and harmony that combines elements of the past and present
in a vibrant and dynamic manner.
Even today the Porticoes of Via Galliera
are still a lively and bustling place with boutiques, cafés, restaurants and
historic workshops. By day, this street is thronged with locals and tourists
approaching from the nearby Via dell'Indipendenza, while in the evening it
turns into a vibrant meeting place, reflecting the convivial spirit of Bologna.
"In the shade of the porticoes" is the column that explores the twelve Porticoes of Bologna, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. In addition to offering insights into their history and architecture, the column also tells of the daily life of those who work, travel and live under those porticoes every day.
